Title: Publicity Associate, Hybrid

Augsburg Fortress Publishers (AFP) is a multimedia company composed of five vital, creative imprints: Augsburg Fortress, Sparkhouse, Fortress Press, Beaming Books and Broadleaf Books. We are the publishing ministry for the ELCA and create resources for spiritual growth and development, for Christian worship and faith formation, and for academic study and professional development. At Augsburg Fortress Publishers, you will support two of the book-trade imprints:

Broadleaf Books: Inspiring transformation to foster a more open, just, and compassionate world.

Fortress Press: Compelling theological, biblical, and ethical engagements for the academy and leaders.

The Publicity Associate assists in developing and executing strategic publicity campaigns, with a special focus on adult trade titles. This position provides support, coordination, and assistance to the Executive Director of Marketing and Sales, the Publicity Manager, and the Publicist. This position also serves as a liaison between departments, the media, bookstores, and authors. We provide thorough onboarding, training, ongoing professional development, and the support you need to succeed and thrive in this role.

The Publicity Associate position is part of our hybrid work model, requiring residence in the Twin Cities. After in-office onboarding, this position requires working onsite 2-3 days a week in our Minneapolis office.

The Publicity Associate holds these responsibilities:

Campaign Execution & Strategy
• Assist in the execution of publicity campaigns across multiple channels.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director of Marketing and Sales and Publicity Manager to inform campaign strategy.
• Coordinate seasonal pitches with media outlets and the publicity team.
• Book seasonal appointments and other campaign-related meetings.

Media Relations & Outreach
• Write compelling pitches and press releases tailored to target audiences.
• Assemble press kits and organize pitch lists for outreach.
• Perform targeted outreach to select media contacts.
• Fill requests for advanced reader copies (ARCs) and review copies.
• Utilize tools like Muck Rack and Pod Chaser to research media outlets and understand audience demographics.

Author & Event Support
• Manage author communication and support related to publicity and marketing efforts.
• Develop relationships with influential bookstores and pitch select authors for launch events.
• Coordinate with event coordinators at top bookstores and venues to book author events.

Reporting & Communication
• Maintain campaign reporting and communicate team successes internally.
• Assemble and disseminate weekly PR reports.
• Write and distribute “flash” reports highlighting significant media hits.
• Update authors on notable media coverage and track media/event bookings in campaign detail reports.

Desired education and experience:
• B.A. in marketing, English, communications or other closely related field
• 1-2 years in publicity, book publishing, or similar fields
• Experience, which might include internships, in book trade and/or consumer publishing or related media fields is desirable
• Experience working with progressive Christian media and networks preferred

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Able to write persuasively about complex material
• Must be able to thrive in a highly collaborative environment
• Passion for books
• Familiarity with religion and religious life

The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $55,000 annually. The offered starting salary will be based on the applicant’s knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data for this position.
